  1. Add channel choice for VPN profiles

It would be excellent to have the ability to push VPN profiles as both user and device channel (similar to custom configuration profiles).

We added the "For macOS devices, deploy as a device profile instead of a user profile." option to the VPN profile (and most other profiles) a while back, but it seems we missed marking this request as complete.

  2. Low licence warning

We're using pre-paid licences (rather than pay as you go with a credit card) and have hit the hard limit of seats a couple of times. Which breaks new enrolments in unpleasant ways.

Could some kind of mechanism to auto-alert admins (or a web hook? Or and API we can call?) be added when the free seats drop below a user defined threshold so we can start the process of ordering more licences?

The billing page now includes an option to be notified when available licenses is low. This option is available for accounts that have purchased licenses via manual invoicing.

  3. Update the SimpleMDM Name via the API

As per your document https://docs.simplemdm.com/article/60-device-name-vs-simplemdm-name-whats-the-difference, there are two names within the console for a macOS device.

Our DEP workflow will soon be able to update the 'Device Name' using the API (https://simplemdm.com/docs/api/#update43) but it isn't currently possible to update the 'SimpleMDM Name' in the same way.

Could the API be updated to either a)allow changing of the 'SimpleMDM Name' explicitly using its own call and/or b) allow the 'Device Name' call to also update the 'SimpleMDM Name' using a boolean flag to do so.

  4. Include device vs. user profile and attribute support for custom configuration profiles in API

Include the status of the "For macOS devices, deploy as a device profile instead of a user profile" and "Enable attribute support" checkboxes for custom configuration profiles in the API. The ability to check the current status (i.e., whether these are true or false), set/change them, and set them when uploading custom config profiles through the API would be useful.

  5. Reveal sidebar categories in all contexts

On the left side of the main view, I'd like to be able to see all the links for all contexts all the time. So often when I'm working on a new deployment, I find myself switching from Devices --> Groups to Apps --> Assignments to Configs --> Providers. If the sub-contexts for Config (eg Profiles Providers Certificates Attributes) were visible when I'm editing Devices --> Groups, it would save me a click and help me build a better mental map of where everything is. I sometimes find myself clicking around looking for which context has the right sub-context I…

  6. Unique DEP local admin password (per device)

It would be great if the password of the local administrator account created during the DEP enrolment was unique to that device.

The password could be shown in the device information together with the EFI password and FileVault recovery key.

  8. Allow wallpaper to be set per user/device as well as per group

    Hi,

Could you possibly allow us to set the phone wallpaper per device, overriding the default wallpapers set in the group the device belongs to?

We are looking at customising the wallpapers with ID related information (per user), but currently we'd have to setup a device group for EVERY device one-by-one.

  9. Reset Firmware

An easy way to remove an EFI Firmware Password from a users device (Maybe a click button in the console where the password is displayed?) and also a way to re-apply it more easily after performing SMC (System Management Controller) and PRAM/NVRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory / Non-Volatile RAM) resets. (I contacted support beforehand. Even better would be a way to push an SMC reset to the machine, or PRAM, but I don't think this would be possible???

At the moment, I am booting into recovery on a users device, turning the EFI PW off, restarting, performing a SMC reset…

The “Actions” button under the device details screen now includes an option to “Clear firmware password”. This is also available via the API.

  10. Integration with Google LDAP for user enrolment

Google now has LDAP service but this requires the LDAP client be able to use a certificate to connect to the server. this would need to be added to simple MDM capabilities.

SAML-based authentication during the enrollment process is now supported by SimpleMDM. We support authenticating against Google with SAML over LDAP to achieve the same results.

  11. Scope API key

I'd like multiple API keys able to be generated in the UI that have scoped permissions, for example, one API key restricted to only being able to hit the device endpoint, or one API key only being able to access Users.

With this feature, it would reduce the threat of the API key being compromised as it's potential scope would be limited.

  12. Add firewall profile support

It would be great to add a configuration profile to force enabling the firewall on a mac machine. I am very surprised that it isn't an option, there are other mdm solutions that offer this and it seems pretty basic for ensuring security.

  13. mdm eventlog

Add a detailed EventLog in the MDM.

It would be nice to know if commands/messages were successfully sent to a device.

Logging is now available in SimpleMDM under Account > Logs.

  14. Allow unlimited apps in folders of "Home Screen Layout" profiles

As far as I know, iOS does not limit the number of app in one folder, but currently with SimpleMDM interface to manager home screen layout we are limited to 9 apps per folder.

  15. update software on an individual device via the API

As discussed in Slack - there's currently an "update_apps" command in the API - but that only applies to device groups. I'd like to be able to update software on an individual device via the API.

i.e. to push a test device to the latest and greatest, but leaving other devices on the standard version...

There's a button to do this in the GUI, so I'm hoping adding that to the API shouldn't be too bad?

  16. Add a "comment" field to the Kernel Extension policy page

It would be awesome to have a comment field so we could note which app or developer each team ID or bundle ID is for.

  17. Setup a role option to only have access to view/rotate FV PRK

We have techs that need to access the FV PRK for troubleshooting purposes and also rotate the key if they view/use it. The current Role options are too broad and give access to other features that the techs shouldn't have access to.

I'd like to see a user Role option to allow only the rotation of a FV PRK and not the the rest of Push assigned apps and updates. Wipe, lock, remove passcode, locate, and message devices. Enable and disable lost mode for devices. Checking the box for that Role option gives me the rotation option but I don't…

This is now possible with the "Allow secret information visibility" options for User Roles.

  18. app version device distribution

See adoption of a specific app version.

We publish continuously new versions of our mdm distributed enterprise app. Often, however, users decline to update to a certain version because e.g. they're in the middle of using the app. We know how to send another updated cycle out to the devices, but sometimes it would be helpful to see which devices have a specific version. Right now we have to manually go into each device, then to the apps section to see what's going on. Quite annoying for 30 devices and the numbers of our devices will increase in the future.

I'm marking this one as completed because SimpleMDM does display this information on the "Installs" tab under the App Details (Catalog > click app name > Installs tab).

If there is something else that you would like to see added to expand upon this, please submit a new suggestion. Thanks!

  19. Push scripts and or terminal commands to macOS clients

I need to be able to push scripts and terminal commands to my macOS clients from my MDM solution.

If this was in place, it would open up a lot of possibilities for tighter integration with a package distribution system like Munki.

See the new “Scripts” feature on the side navigation menu.

  20. Lookup exact model

Based on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201300 you could show the exact model names.

This would be useful to see the age of our Macs and distinguish between 13 and 15 inch models.

Today this information is only available in the export.
